(In response to the question: "What kind of jobs are out there for sex offenders? My son got a job...but I'm wondering what he has to face the rest of his life being registered.") If it's not illegal in your state, a restaurant job may be relatively easy to get, especially a position as a dishwasher, cook, or delivery driver. Restaurants are in a constant state of high turnover, which means they'll take almost anyone that's sufficiently qualified for the job, especially if they're going through a lot of resignations. In general, any line of work that is bad enough to cause significant employee turnover will be a prime target for you to look at, because the fact that no one wants to do the job will only help you get that job. Also, starting your own line of work rather than working for someone else effectively eliminates the risk of being fired, having a background check kill your eligibility, and other similar blockades. It is much more difficult and requires serious effort and drive, but the money can be quite excellent, the scrutiny of others is almost entirely eliminated if the work doesn't really involve being around children with any significance, and the potential for growth is essentially unlimited. It's not illegal for a sex offender to start or manage a business, incorporate a business, or do contract work. There is plenty of subcontractor work or short-term employment out there that does not involve background checks, such as assisting someone with landscaping or construction tasks. If you go for a job that requires background checks, be sure to talk to the person that makes the final hiring decision for at least five minutes, DIRECTLY. Explain your offense honestly, and explain the excellent business reasons to hire you, the sex offender, to that dishwasher position: you are in real need of employment, you have trouble finding employment and so you will be far less likely to resign or walk out on the job, and because of your need for the work you will be a harder-working and more dedicated employee than the average person who can simply say "see ya!" and go get another job at another place quite easily. Explain that you're applying for the position because you know it involves very limited contact, or none at all, with minors, which keeps both yourself and the employer from worrying about the possibility of an accusation arising.
