I think that a more fundamental argument against the kind of insane punishments used for failure to register as a sex offender can be made by striking a comparison between the penalties for failure to register as a sex offender and failure to comply with other regulatory measures. For example, what is the punishment if you drive with an expired driver's license (failure to renew your license before driving again)? How about the penalties for failing to file and pay state or federal income tax? Or what about failing to apply for a building permit before starting construction? Residing in a residence that has not been approved by required building inspectors? Hell, how about performing the work of a licensed contractor (electrician, plumber, etc.) without holding the proper contractor license to do so? Selling or procuring alcoholic beverages or cigarettes for minors? Hell, what about FAILURE TO APPEAR IN COURT, which is ALWAYS a MISDEMEANOR? CONTEMPT OF COURT OR CONTEMPT OF CONGRESS IS A MISDEMEANOR. This is directly violating the order of institutions of the legislative and judicial branches, and yet it is a misdemeanor. Why is failure to register as a sex offender punished ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE more harshly than FAILURE TO APPEAR IN COURT? *TAO* Questions? Comments?
